As I’ve mentioned in earlier blog posts, Goodreads, in my opinion, is hands-down the best place to list a giveaway, especially if you’re an author with not too many followers on social media (working on that myself, still).
In a nutshell, Goodreads is the largest reading community an author can expose their book to. You can give away only one of your books for free, but you’ll still have hundreds of readers exposed to your book, many of which will be intrigued by your plot summary and ‘shelve’ your book for a later date.
Though I’ve had a good experience with giveaways on Goodreads and plan to do another in the future, I’ve been looking to gain followers and promote giveaways on another platform: Instagram.
I’ll admit it: I’m not very good at taking pictures. Come to think of it, I actually don’t take a lot of them. When I traveled abroad to Germany and Norway a couple years ago, I took photos of wool blankets in a store in Oslo and of flowers growing in a pot somewhere. I didn’t think to take photos of the beautiful fjords and waterfalls I witnessed while traveling through the mountains by train ride. I just shrugged and figured that if I wanted to see it again, I’d just Google it.
But pictures can be a great marketing tool for authors—through pictures, you can connect with your readers. You can show them the next novel you’re reading for research on your next book. You can post pictures from your personal life. You can post the occasional promotion, like a sale on your book, or a sneak peek into your next novel, like cover ideas. You can also get readers involved—such as with the cover ideas, you can ask readers and followers to vote on their favorite.
You can do all of this on your personal blog, but Instagram exposes you many more potential readers, especially with the use of hashtags. And I find that although Goodreads gives my book a lot of exposure, Instagram offers a different kind of connection, one that compliments the connection I have with others on Goodreads. You may also attract potential readers on Instagram who maybe don’t read very often and don’t have a Goodreads account!
I’ve only done one giveaway on Instagram before, and it didn’t get as much exposure as my Goodreads giveaway…not nearly as much. But when I requested reviews for my book in exchange for a free copy, I got a lot more attention. In a way, it’s like the same thing—you’re giving away a copy of your book for free. The only difference is that the receiver has a popular book review blog that will help you gain even more exposure!
In the near future I plan on doing another few giveaways—both on Goodreads and Instagram, and I’ll compare the results of each for a second time. Follow me on both platforms (links below) so you don’t miss out on two chances to win a free copy of The Lerewood!
